Okay, I feel better about not having remembered the story I'd never heard now...

The second one, tho, you have told me or this has been an issue for more than one person... Sounds like everyone has an actual history of being fucked with by MUNI except me-- I end up being invited to hang out on buses by drivers who are smoking to keep out of the cold and get to hear all about how the unions are working with the man to screw employees and then there's a paycheck I'm being forced to look at so I can see how little the driver gets paid... I stopped taking the 10 because of that...

Brendan- I don't think I ever told you this story. I have to say that it put me off from cheating the transit system ever again (it was my 1st and only offense!) I had another instant with transit only I wasn't really cheating the system. Max and I had transfers and needed to catch a street car downtown but there was no muni guy at the turnstyle. So we hoped the turnstyle and a "do-gooder" literally grabbed us by the backs of our shirts and yanked us backwards and admonished us for not paying and refused to let go of us until a muni guy came even though we showed him our valid transfers. The muni guy just let us through and didn't even care. In hindsight, I should have started screaming "Stop touching me you sick fuck!" I think at the fear of being seen as a molester would have allowed for our immediate release. Too bad I'm more savvy now...

Lou:
Sorry if I've blacked out any war-stories from Rome involving the fare police-- it seems like I've probably heard this one before and it's really irritating to have forgotten... It's pretty fucked that when there are no alternatives you're still subject to being busted and I can't imagine the abject terror you must have felt being in a foreign country with shaky legality... At least on the MUNI underground I've had situations where I cannot get change because the machines are broken and the attendant just tells me to go through and pay on the train... Not that I pay on the train but I am at least able to get to somewhere where I can pay instead of being told I have to go find some place to get change...

Dustin:
I've been suffering for the art of free rides for many a year now and if anything the anxiety has worsened, similar to my growing inability to fly... This runs contrary to common sense, I know, which indicates less my social intolerance and more my personal intolerance... I must say, however, that while I may never have subjected a bag of poop to the flame I have carried out elaborate personal vendettas against various offensive publications in the past... It's been a good while, tho, and I wonder how able I would be, were I to come across a Metropolitan newspaper rack today, to set it ablaze with a safety flare...

No, I've never knowingly seen an Afghan hound... I suppose the power of the internet wins again...

brendan, you are clearly a smooth operator, and it is commendable that you involve yourself in such risky affairs. I think that you will find that the more often you do these kinds of things, the more they will become a second nature, but be wary. these small and seemingly insignificant acts that are presumably a product of your social intolerance may be a gateway, not unlike marijuana, to more vicious acts of dissent like lighting bags of poop on fire.
by the way, have you ever seen an afghan hound? those things look really weird.

Brendan,

I would like to point out that Jay is no the only person you know to have ever gotten busted for fair evasion; in fact, I have been busted for it. This was back when I was in college before I lived there. Anyway, I woke up and went to buy a ticket at a tabacchi or newstand and find out everything is closed because it's a public holiday. Now in Rome you cannot buy a bus ticket on the bus you have to buy it from stores. I didn't have enough money for a cab, so what was I to do? I had a train to catch, so I risked it. A stop before the police got on, I had a sinking feeling that I should get off the bus but didn't. The police showed me no mercy though I explained my predicament to them in Italian- they said I should have bought a ticket from the train station, to which I replied "But that's where I'm going." An Italian woman came to my defense to no avail, I was fined 100,000.00 lira or $50 plus the cost of a bus ticket which was around 70 cents at the time. They took down my passport and everything. It was lame. In retrospect I just should have started crying, that worked for a friend of my a couple years later.
The curious thing is that when I was living there I saw people ticketed all the time for fair evasion- usually the elderly who became irate when someone told them they should be paying. And the cost of an elderly discounted monthly pass was about 17 euros.
