It really makes you wonder at what point it was decided making a video was a good idea… Do you think the DM just wanted to do it and scraped together friends and children or do you think some poor Restless rep saw the song hit college radio and thought MTV was the next logical step?
Anyways, thanks for digging that up… But what did Husker Du ever do to the Dead Milkmen, I wonder…
I always parsed that line as sort of a lighthearted snark at that late-80s post-punk seriousness of which HD is a fairly high profile example. I wouldn’t defend that interpretation to the death or anything, but I think it makes sense if you think about the punk rock argot’s nonstandard expansion of “hippie” over the years as a kind of “utility slur”–e.g., sex pistols type pronouncements that, say, having sex makes you a hippie. Plus Grant Hart did have long hair at one point.
True, the Milkmen were quite fond of the light-hearted snark… Guess I’m always looking for more direct connections, like Husker Du and the Dead Milkmen sharing a bill some night and someone taking offense at something said and all of a sudden Bob Mould has to have a deli tray surgically removed from hi arse and Rodney Anonymous is hiding out in Tacoland, keeping his eyes peeled for the law…
