My ladyfriend was telling me the other day about how there is a large portion of the 'public interest' lawyers (those who do pro-bono or really low paid work for the people-causes that need smart lawyers most) in portland and the west coast in general (she's a law student) also wait tables or clean houses at night to make ends meet.

there truly is no way to actually raise a family on the wages of one of these public interest lawyers.

so in a way these public interester's are either:

a) going to be rewarded in the long run by their selfless service to humanity through some ancient evoluntionary mechanism whereby they recognize the species' need for this community affirming work (maybe by some mate-preference mechanism whereby they obtain the nicest and sweetest mates)

b) going to get weeded out as natural selection goes marching over them and their mentalities without regard for the long-term enrichment of our communities. they are simply not doing a service that will enable them to better pass on their genes (and more importantly their ability to raise kids in thier selfless image... arguably more important than genetic makeup...)

anywho, not sure if thats relevant. but it is an observation.

therefore, the measure of success held up against a given adult should NOT be from any of the following categories:

-job
-status of job
-pay of job
-quality/quantity/variety of partner
-interests that fit a desgnated cool bracket, eg fashion, rock climbing, aquariums
-apparent happiness
-car, motorcycle, bi-plane or bi-cycle
-material ownership
-asset ownership
-education (formal & informal) ... be your own judge
-and many more besides.

the true succes of an adult is the measure of how they prepare youth to not mistake their look as one of certainty. an responsible adult should prepare youth for the shock of disillusion and anchorless confusion of life. when i see 20 something go getters around me i envy them for one of two things:

they either sythnesized the miserable truth of humanity long ago, which IS an achievement

or

they can function inspite of this knowledge, which is an equally impressive achievement.

i certainly don't envy them for what mode of transport, tattoo or std they flourish.
