Then let me ask you this, is it ok to write people off completely because you don't agree with their goals? Can you care about people in general and still hate a few individuals? Or is everyone equally magic in their own way and you just have to realize that you can't see all the ways they're special? I think I know what your answer is, but still...

The pinhole/railroad theory probably applies best when you evaluate the anti-Bowie obsession that propels people through life... Intense focus on the tried and true birth/school/work/death lifestyle is, although radically different on the surface, doesn't really fundamentally differ from the obsessive pursuit of becomming a rock star, resistance fighter or monk... I guess the real difference is how your blinders are adjusted; are you forever focused on tight pants and glitter, rotting vegetables and meditation, nazis or securing a good mortgage to send little Billie to Princeton just like his old man?

And yet I get the sense that we are all unable to veer from our David Bowie paths. It reminds me of a Vonnegut quote that I can't remember, but the gist is that humans' perception of time is like looking through a pinhole of a box and travelling forward on railroad tracks. If we could take the box off, look around, and step off the tracks, then maybe we'd see how wonderfully inevitable we are. Or maybe we're all fucked and it's life's cruel joke that we can think otherwise, however briefly.
